PLANNING YOUR HOME TRANSITION

We know each home is different. These five steps will start you on your journey.

  1. Know your motivation

Different efficient electrification options have different benefits.

Where you start will depend on what’s most important to you, so be clear about your motivation. Is it:

  • Cheaper energy bills?

  • Better health and home comfort?

  • Lower emissions?

2. Get to know your home

This will determine what efficient electrification options are available to you.
  • Do you rent or own your home? Is it a house or apartment?

  • When was it built and how was it constructed?

  • How long do you intend to live here? Are you considering renovations or a new build?

  • What energy efficiency and electrification features do you already have?

  • What are your biggest energy needs and when do you use them?

Retrofitting existing homes

Most buildings (houses and apartments) can be retrofitted to be energy efficient and electric, although some options are easier than others.

New buildings and renovations

Energy efficiency and electrification are easiest when building new or doing a major renovation. If this is on the cards, make sure efficient electrification is part of your plan.

3. Understand your finances

Your finances could determine what and when you’re able to make certain home improvements.
  • How much do you currently spend on energy running costs?  (Electricity, gas & petrol)

  • Are you willing or able to invest upfront to save money longer term? What sort of payback period do you expect? What funds do you have available now?

  • Compare costs and savings from different efficiency and electrification options.

  • Explore financing options. Look at subsidies, grants or deferred payment options. Contact your bank about green home loans.

4. Make a plan
